4 Keys to Recovery from Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder, and Anorexia

With January around the corner, we will hear a substantial amount from the media about weight loss/ diet with this/ exercise this way… While in the midst of recovering from an eating disorder, this can be incredibly triggering. What should we focus on during this time of hubbub over the latest diet craze?

Our hearts 

I know my EKG was irregular before I went into residential treatment. I know my heart supplies my body with fresh oxygen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and I want it to pump strongly. Eating for my heart muscle will make taking walks with my friends’ dog easier. This will able me to get stronger in every aspect of my life.

Pauses

Impulsivity and reactivity were my strong suites. Have you met my dad from New Jersey? Yeah, I had to realize that I did not want to live that way. A simple breath, a simple pause to think before diving in to respond or to have a second chocolate bar makes all the difference. Is this serving me or am I just being reactive because someone pissed me off?

Going Against the Grain

Your recovery is yours, Not your parents and Not others in treatment. While in intensive outpatient, I learned that can be highly influenced by those around me. I realized the other girls in treatment may not have the same values as I do. I definitely learned that if I was to get out in the community that I would have to fly solo many times because my peers don’t necessarily have the same interests as me.

What are your 5 goals for the next 6 months?

A wise person asked me what are my 5 goals for the next 6 months. As my life as shifted over this year, my goals have changed as well. If I had to write them out, which is recommended… I’d choose a goal in 5 areas: health, spiritual, career, artistic hobbies, and relationships.
